The History of The Norton Singers

The Norton Singers was established by members of the Wheaton College faculty and residents of the Town of Norton.  The purpose of the group is to bring to the community an appreciation of the performing arts in the form of high quality productions.

The group’s first production, H.M.S. Pinafore, was produced in 1945.  Over the years they have performed some of the well-known standards of Broadway, such as: Fiddler on the Roof, Camelot, Oklahoma and Show Boat.

They have also introduced several lesser-known shows to local theatergoers, such as Tenderloin, Around the World in Eighty Days, Donnybrook and Plain and Fancy.

In September of 2000, they presented a review written by many of its members called, “The Century on Broadway”, which followed the evolution of Broadway over the 20th Century.

Over the years, the Singers have called many places home.  They have performed in the building which is now the Yelle School Auditorium, the old town hall, and in recent years at Wheaton College’s Watson Auditorium and the Norton Middle School.

The group has attracted local talent, as well as people from such distant communities as Chelmsford, Methuen, and Spencer, MA, to be part of their productions.

The Norton Singers Supports the Community

The Norton Singers is a strong member of the community.  Each year they have provided holiday music for the traditional Lighting of the Norton Common Christmas tree.  They also present an annual scholarship to a Norton High School senior and sponsor a self-renewing grant for a Performing Arts student at Wheaton College.
